Analysis and Reflection
As soon as the ‘wiki’ was introduced to me in CCT 205 I became fascinated with the collaborative idea and could not wait to see and learn more about it. Attending each tutorial helped me in preparing for my wiki assignment, allowing me to learn how to navigate around the wiki space. Within the CCT 205 wiki space, some of my first contributions were adding the definitions of many terms that Professor Gail Benick had on her Test One outline, as well as editing or adding more material to existing terms that others had written already. This helped me study because after writing up my study notes, I typed them up on the wiki spaces, whichever ones were not yet filled in.
After the terms, I filled in my alias in the Aliases space. Then, I went on to make my own personal page on a topic which interested me when I first heard about it a few months ago. It is called DeadJournal, a parody of Live Journal that already exists. I wrote about the many functions this site or journal includes, which could help one navigate through it. I then added an image to this page.
Reflections and Observations:
As the assignment was on the go, I felt that the wiki idea was a great collaborative tool that helped me in studying for the first test. I was able to apply my knowledge of certain terms and put them up for others to either agree with, or learn from, or to edit and elaborate on. The wiki space in my opinion is a great tool for learning and reading about many interesting topics but I feel that this assigment was not such a great choice for academic grading. It seems that it will be hard to evaluate based on when people contributed. Also, I feel that this collaborative source is to be used for learning and finding new resources on certain topics. In this case, I think that not all students took the time to go ahead and read all of the material on this space. I think that students did not utilize this space the way it was intended to be used because students would only contribute to this space and edit material, based on the fact that it was necessary for grading. People should read an edit because they are interested and want to elabortate with thier knowledge on a certain topic, not be forced into it, isn't that what the wiki is all about?
On the contrary, I found this wiki space to be very useful, integrated and helpful. Each CCIT class should incorporate some sort of collaborative tool like this to keep students up to date with all terms, theories, and concepts that they are unclear about. It helps those weary about certain topics, and those who need last minute information.
It was a great way for students to help other students out, as well as themselves. Consistent edits in this space allowed for a lot of elaboration, leaving us with a plethora of information than what we started with. If we look back at what we had at the beginning of this assignment, it is a lot less then what we can take with us now. We are more educated and knowledgable on many levels. We have had the opportunity to write about what interests us and read about what interests others as well under the Topics of Interest heading.
I think that for future grading purposes that this type of assignment would not be as valuable to the marking as others may. It is inconsistent in how the marks will be distributed. If one person has all their work done but cannot post it until a certain time, they will be evaluated differently than those who post immediately. Each person lives a different life and cannot be like the next, therefore, an essay or written project that is all due at the same time for everyone would in my opinion be more beneficial to the student. Although this project is an interetsing one which differs from many other CCIT courses, it could be improved.
This assignment was good in the fact that it was not a repetitive type of assignment, but those seem to be the ones that are the fairest of them all.
Finally, I feel that I have learned many things with the wiki tool, but not as much as I could have learned. I did not have the chance to read through each topic, because each day, each minute they are being updated, it is hard to stay on track with the consistent collaborations happening all of the time.
